The Wine Route

The Wine Route

The Valle de Guadalupe, located in the state of Baja California, is recognized as Mexico’s leading region for quality wine production.

For several decades now, it has been known as

‘La Ruta del Vino’.

Upon passing through the Valley, just about 40 minutes from the Pacific Ocean, you will witness the spectacular vineyards, where history and culture merge to create unique sensory experiences.

The success of grape cultivation in Valle de Guadalupe is attributed to Baja’s semi-desert climate, along with the cold ocean currents; the combination of these factors results in a Mediterranean-style climate, which is ideal for viticulture.

It was the Dominican missionary Félix Caballero who, in 1834, founded the Mission of Our Lady of Guadalupe of the North, one of whose main activities was precisely wine production. Over time, the small wineries fell into abandonment when the Mexican government decided to expropriate the lands of the Catholic Church; it wasn’t until 1888 that the first large-scale winery was established.

At the beginning of the 19th century, a considerable influx of Russian immigrants fleeing their homeland to escape military conscription settled in the peaceful and serene Valle de Guadalupe. They proceeded to acquire land and began cultivating grapes for winemaking purposes.

Thus, Valle de Guadalupe is a place of great beauty and charming landscapes, its wines an art, and its old-world charm certainly captivating. Without a doubt, the Wine Route is a unique experience.
